The food barometer is Reformaten’s recurring political survey. So many solutions to the food system transition already exist, but still very little happens? By examining what the various parties are actually ready to invest in, we hope that the politicians will become braver and the voters better informed. Previous barometers have been based on research reports and government assignments, we never come up with what is important to highlight ourselves – but base everything we do on what the research demands, thus speeding up the transition. The food barometer is always made in collaboration with other actors! See previous years’ reports and analyzes below, and don’t hesitate to contact us if you know exactly what the next barometer must be based on.
Since 2021, the Public Health Agency and the Swedish Food Agency have been commissioned by the government to produce proposals for national goals, areas of action and indicators for sustainable and healthy food consumption. Now the mission is reported, & we are afraid that the government will scrap the targets.
”>The Cancer Foundation and WWF the proposed efforts directly to each party, to see if they are ready to invest in the authorities’ recommendations. Follow the launch of the Food Barometer’s results live below on March 19.This year’s Food Barometer draws attention to World Hunger Day through a collaboration between Reformaten, The Hunger Project Sweden and SIANI. Together, we want to highlight how the food system is global and that what we consume and produce affects places outside of Sweden. Hunger and food shortages are, among other things, a consequence of unsustainable food systems, and are further affected by ongoing wars, climate change and inequality. With more sustainable and fair food systems, there are conditions for achieving the sustainability goals in Agenda 2030. But it will not happen spontaneously – all sectors, including politics, need to get involved and act. The food barometer shows which changes the various parties are ready to work for. Because the system is global and complex, and change has to start somewhere. Sweden can initiate and support a positive change.
The reform’s second Food Barometer was made together with WWF, the Nature Conservation Association and the Heart and Lung Foundation, with the aim of asking each Riksdag party about what measures they are prepared to put forward so that everyone in Sweden has the opportunity for sustainable and healthy food consumption. Since 2021, the Public Health Agency and the Swedish Food Agency have been tasked by the government to develop proposals for national goals, areas of action and indicators for sustainable and healthy food consumption. The assignment must be reported in 2024, we decided to speed up that process by re-formulating the basis for the assignment into questions – which we asked the parties in the Riksdag. Below you can read the report in its entirety and see the recorded expert analysis of the results.
Our first Food Barometer was an initiative by Klara Guthe Peterson, who designed the barometer based on the SLU Future Foods report ”Governing means for sustainable food consumption – an overview of knowledge and ways forward”. The 17 policy instruments in SLU’s report are categorized into three policy instrument categories based on which mechanisms the state can use.
The report’s proposal for 17 policy instruments was reformulated into questions for each policy instrument and created the survey Reformaten’s first Food Barometer – Do it easy to eat right. The parties had the opportunity to answer yes, no, not at all and leave a comment to each question. Below you can read the report in its entirety and see the recorded expert analysis of the results.
